Welcome to Digital Photo Advice

The announcement by Olympus of the Micro Four Thirds system (see Photo News below) is one of the most interesting developments of the year. Before I read the press release properly I was wondering how they were going to make a DSLR so small. Then it became obvious that the new camera wouldn't be using the conventional SLR mirror which takes up so much space.

Unfortunately the original 4/3rds system cannot be considered to be a great success, sales are modest and even the E-420 although smaller than all other DSLRs is still a relatively large camera.

So what will the Micro 4/3rds have to offer? Thankfully they are keeping the same sensor, so that's good news. The small size of the cameras will appeal to a great number of people who think DSLRs are too big.

It's not clear whether the cameras will have a just a LCD or an electronic viewfinder as well. May I put the case for a EVF? While they aren't ideal you can frame the shot and review it afterwards in bright sunlight with no problem. Their main disadvantage is poor resolution, if Olympus could fit a high resolution EVF I think it would help the new system be a winner.

Getting the price right will be important, the cameras should be priced at below the cost of other DSLRs. Olympus must be congratulated for their innovative design, it will be interesting to see the cameras when they become available.

Happy photo taking

New Micro Four Thirds System to be introduced by Olympus and Panasonic
An exciting new interchangeable lens system is to be developed by Olympus and Panasonic called Micro Four Thirds. It'll have the same size sensor as the present Four Thirds system but the lenses and camera bodies will be considerably smaller, this will be achieved by eliminating the mirror system used in normal DSLRs.
